Heather Pattison RCC #1880
Heather has over 25-years of experience working with individuals, children, adolescents and families as a Counsellor and in the last decade, as a Registered Play Therapist. She has worked in various mental health settings with clients of all ages.
Heather’s overarching philosophy to counselling is growth oriented, empowering and person centered. She believes that our life experiences create stories that we live by - stories about ourselves and the world. Sometimes these stories are helpful for us; other times they come at a cost and limit us. Therapy can provide us an opportunity to safely explore how our experiences have shaped our perceptions and choices – and to move into a future that is more in alignment with our values.
Heather believes that childhood and adolescence is a critical period of emotional growth and development. Our sense of self-worth and trust in others takes shape during our formative years and we may continue to live out these earlier conditionings long into adulthood. Engaging with a therapist at any age can help us become more aware of our conditioned responses and learn new ways of being with ourselves and others.
Heather is trained in parenting approaches that emphasize the parent/child relationship - or attachment - and believes that when children and teens are secure in their most important relationships, there is more harmony for the entire family.
Heather has extensive experience helping individual adults. She has worked in addictions treatment, trauma treatment for women, life transitions, and loss and grief. Her experience working with parents of children with developmental challenges is an area where she has particular sensitivity and experience.
As a Play Therapist, Heather has training in Sand Tray Therapy, a modality that is highly effective in helping understand our inner stories. Using figurines in the sand is a natural fit for children as it is a visual and kinesthetic language. Heather has also found it a very safe and effective modality with adults for addressing trauma.
Areas of Focus Include: - Trauma treatment for children (6+), adolescents and adults - Families in conflict - Healing adverse childhood experiences - Loss and grief, including pregnancy loss, navigating a child’s diagnosis, premature birth, complex medical conditions - Attachment-based parenting and parent coaching - Anxiety, depression and emotional regulation - Play-based family assessments
Heather has extensive training and integrates these schools/methods of therapy: Synergetic Play Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Sand Tray Therapy for Trauma, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Forward Facing Trauma Therapy, Child Centered Play Therapy, Theraplay, Child/Parent Relationship Therapy, Circle of Security Parenting
