He dealt with many clinical cases, from individuals struggling with low self-esteem to trauma from childhood abuse, depression, anxiety, and personality disorders. He has counselled couples, done personality assessments, and taught communication and conflict-resolution skills. Jim now has twelve years of professional experience as a substance abuse counsellor. He is skilled as well in individual, couple, and group counselling. He describes his philosophy of counselling therapy as follows:
“In my 28-year career as a clinical counsellor and educator, I have sought to create a “safe place where people can be vulnerable.” I consider the tender vulnerability of the soul a “sacred place,” to be treated with the utmost respect and compassionate care. Furthermore, my goal, therefore, is to establish a strong therapeutic alliance, where both myself and clients work in a collaborative change process. I employ counselling techniques from various schools and models, including Humanistic, Solution-Focused, Cognitive Behavioral, and EMDR Therapy. Additionally, I believe, as did Albert Ellis, that what we think about activating events, produces feelings that drive behaviors. My goal is client empowerment, through greater self-awareness as well as equipping with knowledge and skills so clients can live mature, responsible, and enjoyable lives.”
